Q1: What is an STCW 10 Certificate and Who Needs One?

In basic terms, the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) 2010 is the updated version of the STCW 95 and STCW 78 conventions. These conventions are internationally recognised and the most up-to-date regulation is the STCW 2010. The course is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 metres, including Superyachts and Cruise ships.

Q2: How long is my STCW 2010 certificates valid for?

An STCW certificate is valid for 5 years. After 5 years an STCW refresher or update courses needs to be undertaken.

Q3: My STCW 95 FFFP Certificate expires in 6 months, do I have to do the full STCW 2010 FFFP course again?

No. All you need to do is book on the SCTW 2010 FFFP Update course before your current certificate expires.

Q4: What courses do SALT Services offer?

SALT Services offer a comprehensive STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training (BST) package which covers the following courses (see our website for latest prices);
STCW 2010 – Personal Survival Techniques (PST) – 1 day
STCW 2010 – Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (FFFP) – 2 days
STCW 2010 – Elementary First Aid (EFA) – 1 day
STCW 2010 – Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) – 1 day
STCW 2010 – Proficiency in Security Awareness (SyA) – ½ day

Q5: Can I book STCW 2010 courses separately?

Yes. If you only require one or two additional qualifications to bring yourself up to code, we offer the following stand-alone courses (Subject to availability);
STCW 2010 – Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
STCW 2010 – Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (FFFP)
STCW 2010 – Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Update (FPFFU)

Q8: My company have offered to pay for my course, can you produce an invoice please?

Yes, if your employer is paying for your course, please provide us with full details and we can issue an invoice.

Q9: Do you offer the STCW 2010 Medical Care Onboard Ship Refresher course?

No, we are only accredited by the MCA to provide Elementary First Aid courses.

Q10: Do you offer Advanced FF and Updated Proficiency in Advanced FF courses?

No, we don't currently run this course.

Q11: Do you offer the STCW 2010 Proficiency in Designated Duties and Crowd Control Management courses?

No, but we hope to have MCA approval to deliver them sometime in 2020. Watch this space!

Q12: Do you offer the STCW 2010 HELM Operational and Managers courses?

No, but we hope to have MCA approval to deliver them sometime in 2020. Watch this space!

Q13: Are your courses accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)?

Yes. All SALT courses and certificates are completely up to date and MCA accredited to the 2010 STCW code of practice.

Q14: Are your instructors qualified and accredited?

Definitely yes. Our training manager has 34 years’ experience in the Royal Navy prior to working at SALT. All our other instructors have armed forces, maritime and or emergency services experience and are approved by the MCA.

Q15: Is the STCW 2010 Elementary First Aid course sufficient for renewal of my Advanced Power Boat Commercial Endorsement?

We offer the basic EFA course, accredited by the MCA to STCW 2010 standards. You will need to establish if that's sufficient for renewal of the Advanced Power Boat Commercial Endorsement with your employer.

Q16: Does your Elementary First Aid course cover the use of CAT C Medical Stores? I understand this is a requirement if I am responsible for First Aid on board when operating with a commercial endorsed RYA certificate?

Yes, our course definitely covers the use of CAT C Medical Stores.

Q17: My STCW Basic Safety Certificate is due for refreshing this year and my company has asked me what I need to do to remain in date?

If you are returning to SALT for your training, thank you. We will get you to complete the STCW 2010 PST (1 day) and a STCW 2010 FFFP Update course (1 day). Dates and prices can be found on our website.

Q18: Are there any age restrictions and fitness requirements for your courses?

You must be over 16 years of age and be physically fit to participate in the practical elements of PST and FPFF. If you are enrolled for wither of these courses you will be required to self-certify your physical fitness regardless of whether you have an up to date ENG 1.

Q19: Do I need to provide any personal forms of identification?

Yes. You will need to verify your identity prior to commencing training. You can do this with a passport, national ID card, photographic driving licence or your Seaman’s Discharge Book. If relevant, please also provide proof of your eligibility to work in the UK.

Q20: Will I be sent joining instructions?

Yes, we will send you comprehensive joining instructions once payment has been received for your course(s).

Q21: Can only one person do the Fire Fighting course?

Yes. If there is only one delegate booked on the course our instructors will ensure you get the full level of training required utilising additional staff if necessary.

Q22: Do you do block bookings for groups?

Yes, bookings for groups or companies will be reviewed upon request. If you wish to discuss specific or alternative dates please contact us via the website or call 0131 510 0321 for further information.

Q23: Can you verify that a candidate's STCW certificate is valid?

Yes, we can do this providing the candidates have been trained at SALT Services. Please provide us with a copy of the certificate or the candidate’s name and date of birth.
